Horton Homeward Bound - Adopted! Now living happily in Omaha, Nebraska. Horton and Mary Lou came from a wretched puppy mill in South Dakota. They were thrown out by the breeder because they could not walk. When they came to HUA at 8 weeks of age they could not use their back legs. Horton grew out of it and has checked out ok at the vet. Maybe it was being cramped in a small space with no room to even learn to walk. Mary Lou is not ok. She cannot use either of her back legs. They are just limp and do not work at all. She is in the process of being evaluated by orthopedic specialists to determine if anything can be done. If there are any operations that could help her they couldn't be performed until she is fully grown. It is very sad. The good news is that they are both happy, lovely, funny, sweet, totally adorable pups. Mary Lou doesn't know that anything is wrong. She has adapted and bounces on her rear end to get around. She is quite mobile considering her condition. If she can't be helped by surgery she will be a happy, bouncy girl and will get along just fine with her disability. She wouldn't have been worth anything to a pet store, but she is worth the world to us, and we hope she will be to a lucky new family as well. If you are interested in adopting Mary Lou please write to us and we will keep you updated on her progress at her appointments. Horton is a male Shih-Tzu. He was born 1/11/08. Horton is so happy that he has Buddies! His Buddy, Geoffrey Homer, from Chicago, Illinois, sent him this message: "Sonny Homer was a former HUA resident and wants Horton to have a happy home like his!" Horton sends Geoffrey and Sonny many happy, grateful kisses, hugs and tail wags. His Buddy, Sharlene Szczepanski, from Cedar Grove, New Jersey, sent him this message: "Hi Horton, I'm so happy that you were freed from the puppy mill & can now live like a normal puppy. You & all the dogs at HUA are in my prayers. I can't wait till you find your forever home & become part of a family." Horton sends Sharlene many grateful puppy breath kisses, hugs and wiggles. Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested.
