Homeward Bound - Adopted!
Now living happily in Des Moines, Iowa.
Survivor was found at the dead end of a dirt road near the river. He was emaciated and was curled up with his 3 litter mates, who were all dead. Survivor was the lone one to survive. The nice people who found him were mortified and called HUA immediately for assistance. Survivor is just a baby, but he is already an old dog at heart due to all he has endured. His first few days at the shelter he would barely lift his head and didn't want to touch much food. We were not sure he would pull through. People would sit with him and stroke him and comfort him and he didn't realize what any of it was about. Finally he started to eat better, sit up when people came in and look a little bit hopeful. His food started disappearing faster and faster. When he leaves the building for short walks he just wants to stay near the people and come right back inside where his nice things and good food are located and where he knows the people will be there to care for him. He is making more eye contact and has even started to do some puppy things like tug at a person's jeans with his teeth to say hello. Survivor's story is one that happens over and over in the country where people do not alter their animals and do not value their lives. Survivor's very soul was stolen from him and his litter mates paid with their lives for this very cruel and neglectful treatment.
Survivor is a male mixed breed dog. He is likely part hound, and the other part may be a retriever as he does have webbed feet. Survivor is estimated as being born in January or February of 2006 and weighs 28 pounds. We think he will be a big boy when fully grown.
Survivor is so happy that he has a Buddy! His Buddy, Theresa Gruver, from Greene, New York, sent him this message: "The love is true and real. Absorb it and let the harshness of your past life fade. Be happy my big friend." Survivor sends Theresa many grateful kisses.
Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested.
