Zabrina
Zabrina is DEAD. At only 2 years of age Zabrina died from lack of care on the part of the owner of the unlicensed Iowa breeding facility that she came from. Zabrina had the worst case of heartworms that the HUA staff or veterinarians have ever seen. We were told when we took the dogs that they had NO vet records, because they had not been to a vet. It would have cost too much to provide the dogs with vaccinations, heartworm prevention or the other bare necessities that would keep the dogs alive. The pups sold for only $50 to the local pet stores, so the logic was that there was not enough profit to put any care toward the parents. When Zabrina started to foam at the mouth we feared rabies. It was found that it was a symptom of heartworms so bad they were strangling her entire system and making her critically ill. Zabrina was unable to breath. She died in the arms of the only people who ever loved or cared about her at all. We are so sad that Zabrina knew only a few days of goodness in her entire life, and that she was too sick to enjoy those days. The most sickening thing is that it was entirely preventable for only pennies.
Zabrina was the mother of pet store pups. Considering Zabrina's condition and the condition of the other dogs at this facility how healthy were their pups purchased in the pet stores in Iowa? Could people live with themselves if they knew the puppy they bought contributed to Zabrina's death?
Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested.
