 Providing refuge, love, comfort and security for pets of families fleeing domestic violence.
Tia was beaten in the head with a baseball bat. The blows devastated her face, blinded her in one eye and destroyed her teeth. She was left at the farm house to die along with her unborn puppies. Somehow she lived, gave birth to the puppies and kept them alive until a neighbor told HUA about her. HUA went immediately to rescue this amazing girl. She watched as each of her puppies was carefully loaded into the shelter van. Then she was gently lifted inside. Although she had every reason to fear people, she was trusting and grateful for the kindness.
 Tia had four surgeries at the University of Iowa Vet School in Ames Iowa first to rebuild her face to provide some comfort, to repair her teeth that were open roots causing enormous pain and to remove lumps that were determined to be cancerous. Tia lived at HUA for three years. She was lavished with love and care until she died of cancer.
In honor of her spirit, Tia's Place was created. Tia's Place provides refuge to pets of families who are fleeing domestic violence. Many times people are reluctant to leave an abusive situation because they will not leave their pets. The temporary abuse shelters to not allow pets. Abusers know this fact and often say that if the person leaves the pet will be killed. Often children and pets are the subject of the abuse themselves. So Tia's Place offers refuge for these pets. We will keep the pets safe until the family can create a new life then they can get their pet back. If they are unable to retrieve their pet, we will find a new home for the pet.
