Small, Large and Everything In-Between!

It is a monumental effort to keep the Shelter running - caring for, healing, loving and nourishing thousands of sick, injured, frightened, abandoned or mistreated animals each year. It is a true labor of love, manifested over and over in a million small acts of kindness every day. There are lots of supplies that the shelter needs, there are volunteer opportunities, and other ways to show your support.

Hearts United for Animals does not receive any government funding. Our support comes directly from you and it goes directly to the dogs.
Our gratitude to the thousands of people across the country who share our philosophy and supports our efforts and goals is heartfelt. Together we are a powerful symbol of kindness, love and mercy. The administration of Hearts United for Animals is all volunteer. Your gifts are not funding big salaries here.

Taking Stock and Giving it Away

If you are one of the lucky ones whose has stock that has an appreciated value, you might want to consider making a donation of stock to Hearts United for Animals. It can be a great deal for you and for us! Let's assume that you bought stock at 25 dollars a share. Now the stock is worth 75 dollars. If you sold that stock, you would owe tax on 50 dollars per share. But if you donated this stock to HUA, you would get a tax charitable donation on the full value of the stock - the 75 dollars per share. HUA could sell the stock and since HUA is a qualified charitable organization, HUA would not owe any tax. This is a great way to stretch the giving power of your dollar. This also works with other appreciable items like art, jewelry or collectibles too.

Things We Always Need

MONEY

Hate to be crass about it, but it's the truth! Money buys several THOUSAND pounds of food a month. The dog's have a special diet. To make sure they don't get sick from changing foods we feed only one kind of food that we have shipped in especially for their optimum health. One shipment of food costs about $7,000.

Emergency care for dogs and cats. One trip to the emergency room can cost $1,000. A back or heart operation can easily cost $3,000. Vaccines to protect thousands of puppies. Thousands of animals come through our low cost spay/neuter clinic each year and each is in need of more than the $25 fee will provide. We operate the clinic at a deficit as a public service.

Altering for every dog and cat that comes through HUA. The average cost is $125 for a healthy animal. Many need other work such as dental extractions, tumors removed, hernias repaired, antibiotics. The cost for a routine mill dog spay/neuter/dental and other items that we almost always find would on average be at least $500 if a specialist is not needed, and often times they are needed which runs into the thousands. And all the health care and preventative medicines that keep the guys and gals of HUA in tip top condition once they are with us. (Not to mention some toys and treats too!)

Gift cards to Wal-mart, Pamida, Office Depot, Office Max, Petco, Petsmart or Sam's Club help us to buy the supplies we need at stores that are located near us. The dogs especially like Sam's Club as that is where their very favorite treats come from!

Newspapers so the dogs can do their daily business and keep up to speed with global issues. We ask that newspapers have the slick inserts removed as it takes up valuable staff time to separate them.

And ... the dogs have personally requested -- TOYS, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS, TOYS, TREATS....... (Favorite toys include booda bones, chewmen, rope toys, balls, kongs. The dogs destroy vinyl toys immediately. We don't give the dogs rawhides or Greenies.) Any food donated to the shelter will be used for the food pantry at the low cost spay/neuter clinic because the HUA dogs are on a controlled diet of only one brand of food (to prevent stomach upset).

Vounteer Information

Hearts United for Animals is always looking for volunteers to help promote the interests of companion animals. Here are some of the ways that people can help:

Come to the shelter and volunteer to play with and socialize the resident dogs and cats. Each Saturday and Sunday volunteers come from Omaha and Lincoln to take dogs out to the play yards or socialization rooms, give them baths, trim their nails and have a great time! The dogs adore the attention and the people find this work very rewarding. For more information please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Do home visits for prospective adoptive families. HUA does long distance adoptions to families who live in states all over the country and in Canada. Before we approve an adoption we ask one of our volunteers to go over and meet the family just to be sure that the home is the right one for the dog. We always need volunteers to do the visits and meet the families.
Do you have any press contacts? HUA is always looking for new ways to spread the message of compassion for animals. If you have contacts that are favorable to animal issues, we would like to know about them.
Are you flying anywhere in the United States or Canada? Would you be willing to let a dog come along? We transport many of our dogs by airplane and it is safer if they can fly with a person on the flight. Small dogs can go in the cabin and larger dogs in the cargo hold. We would have volunteers on both ends of the flight and would pay the additional cost. Hold a Fund Raising Event! Several people from across the country have set up booths at fairs or craft shows to benefit HUA! They have held auctions and sold gift items. Margaret Herrera raised over 800 dollars at one event! Thanks Margaret. If you want to hold an event, let us know and we will send you newsletters and information.
Do you have a display spot for newsletters? Maybe your office or your vet has a spot where you could set up some newsletters for people to pick up? Let us know and we will send you a small plastic stand and a stack of newsletters.
PHOTOGRAPHERS! We need photographers in several areas of the country to take photos of dogs in their new homes for use in newsletters and a book.

Visitation Policy

VISITATION POLICY: Visiting hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day including Saturday and Sundy, except Wednesdays because of the operation of our spay/neuter clinic. We are in the country between Auburn and Nebraska City. We cannot be located via MapQuest or any of the other mapping programs. We are all volunteer administration and need to make sure someone will be available to help you when you arrive. We maintain the hours stated above because it is best for the dogs. By 10 a.m. the caregiving and recess schedules are wrapping up and they begin again mid-afternoon. The dogs want to be fed, clean and content when you arrive, so please respect their preferred hours for visitation so as not to disrupt their routine.
