Darling Diego has been at HUA for quite some time now. He was rescued from a horrible puppy mill in Nebraska, and came to us with a shattered spirit. He was afraid of everyone and everything. He did not know how to feel joy. He did not know what to do with his freedom. We thought for sure he'd be with us forever as it just did not seem that he would ever recover enough to function in a home. We wish we could say that Diego is now a perfectly happy, bouncy dog, but he is not. He is still a bit timid and will never be a carefree, fun-in-the-sun type of guy. But he IS so sweet and so loving to to the people he knows. He likes to play with the other dogs and has been spending a lot of time out in the yards, crawling onto volunteers' laps and giving shy little kisses. Diego deserves a home of his home. He asks that it be a quiet one with not a whole lot of busy activities, but he will love his people with all his heart and promises to be a very good new best friend.
Buddy Messages (2)
His Buddy, Patti Stephens, from Dallas, TX, sent him this message: "Diego, you remind me of my first dog from HUA, Austin, a dachshund who came to live with me when he was 8 yrs old. Austin spent the first year sleeping under the bed in a pile of clean socks he nested in. While he never became a 'part animal', he eventually learned life outside his nest was very fun. He was my special friend for 8 years. I envy the family who eventually takes you home; be patient -- they will find you." Diego is starting to believe in that dream of his own family, and sends Patti many tiny kisses and grateful tail wags for reassuring him!
His Buddy, Dweezel, from Santee, CA, sent him this message: "Hi Diego, My name is Dweezel Dachshund and I live in San Diego California. I think this means that we should be buddies until you find a wonderful family to give you a forever home you deserve. By the way the name Diego is Spanish for James. Many hugs and kisses from me and my mom Carolyne Joseph in sunny San Diego. I hope all of your days are as sunny as your namesake." Diego is so pleased to hear from Dweezel and sends both Dweezel and Carolyne many tiny kisses and lots of happy tail wags!

Thanks for Visiting Our Animals!

Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
