Homeward bound-adopted!

Now living happily in Omaha, Nebraska.

Hearts United for Animals rescued 13 dogs from horrible conditions in Thurston County NE in January, 2013. They were living outdoors in piles of feces. They were starving, full of worms and dehydrated because their water dishes were too frozen to get a drink. The cages were made of makeshift wires and latches were bailing wire. The dogs, mainly staghounds, greyhounds and coonhounds, were being bred for hunting. Rick Herchenbach from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the Thurston County Sheriff and the Thurston County Attorney all did a marvelous job of following up on complaints and worked very quickly to make sure the dogs were able to be rescued immediately. HUA rescuers worked to carry the dogs on ice, through dead carcasses of smaller animals to get them to warmth and safety in their travel crates in the HUA van. They were taken immediately to a veterinarian where they received thorough check-ups and wonderful care before arriving at the shelter.

Gretna is a friendly, gentle, appreciative girl who is having the time of her life being free from her cage. She is curious about everything and wants to learn things quicker than we can teach her. She marvels at all of the great toys at her disposal and loves playing fetch with her visitors. Amazingly, Gretna is also house broken. She and most of the other dogs that came from that horrible place immediately learned that the potty was outside and they make sure that their spaces will never be filthy again. Gretna has also mastered the leash and adores being taken on long walks around the campus. She is an awesome young lady who will be eternally loyal to her family and forever grateful to be a cherished member.
Buddy Messages (1)
Her Buddy, Andrew Pearson, from Lincoln, NE, sent her this message: "Hi Gretna! We are so glad you found your way to the good people of HUA. You are so beautiful - we wish we could take you home ourselves, but we know you will find a forever home soon. I bet you will bring so much fun and love to your new family! We hope that family comes to adopt you soon. Until then, we are happy to be your buddies!" Gretna sends Andrew many BIG hugs and very happy, playful kisses!

Thanks for Visiting Our Animals!

Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
