Homeward bound-adopted!

Now living happily in Omaha, NE.

Hemi is a young lab/poodle mix who was surrendered to HUA when she grew too big for the apartment. That person was given the dog by someone else - perhaps a backyard breeder - but we don't know for sure. When Hemi arrived we knew something was immediately wrong with her. We could feel the blood coursing through her heart valve under her arm area.

Hemi was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Both labs and poodles are most commonly affected with PDA. Essentially, she had an opening between two major blood vessels leading from the heart that did not close after birth. It is the worst case that we have seen. Without surgical treatment, over 50% of dogs pass from heart failure within one year.

Dr Merkley performed Hemi's PDA heart valve surgery at Mobile Animal Clinic in Omaha. Hemi had her surgery in late May and is completely healed. Within days of her operation Dr Jensen said it was like flipping on a switch. Hemi was in high gear and ready to go, go, go! She did not appreciate her long rest and recovery period but it all worked out in her favor. Hemi is like a brand new girl now and will have no issues going forward now that her heart valve problem is fixed. She loves to run and play and adores tennis balls. She is a big lover of people and gets along well with other dogs. She is a gorgeous, precious little girl and we are so happy to have been able to save her life with the help of our supporters who made it all possible.
