Homeward Bound - Adopted!

Now living happily in Lincoln, Nebraska

On January 29, 2014, HUA rescued 45 dogs from a puppy mill in South Dakota. Some of the dogs went to other groups and the majority of them (about 30) came to HUA. HUA has been working with this particular mill on downsizing and we are pleased to announce that this mill is now shut down!

Because of these collaborative efforts, another 45 dogs are now free. Of the group, only 3 of them are males. All others are females. Puppies were also released. A few three-month-old Japanese Chin pups and four six-week-old pups are in the group. What does all this mean? Female dogs are not needed at the mill for breeding because puppies aren't selling. Efforts in educating the public are working and we must continue to let people know about puppy mills and their connection to pet stores, newspaper ads, internet ads, etc.

Mayetta did not emerge from the mill unscathed. She had mammary tumors that, once removed, showed signs of a low-grade malignancy. She has been given a good prognosis, however, and that makes us very happy as Mayetta is about the sweetest little Dachshund girl that ever lived. She loves people so much she can barely handle it. Her kisses are to die for and she is not stingy with them. She gets along with all the other little dogs and is as charming as she could be. Mayetta will not know what hit her once she lands a home. We could not imagine a happier dog, but we know being a part of a family would put her into a whole new level of Nirvana.
Buddy Messages (1)
Her Buddy, Barbara Taylor, from Exeter, NH, sent her this message: "Hi Mayetta, I'd love to be your buddy. I read that you weren't in the best of shape when you came to HUA, and I also read that you still need a buddy. I'd love to be yours. Even though you had those scary tumors that had to be fixed, I also read that you'll be OK. You are such a beautiful little girl that I have no doubt that you will find the Forever Home that you've always deserved, but not to worry because just now, you are with HUA who are just about the best people to be rescued by. Not to worry, because until you do find your Forever Home, they will take the best care of you, to make sure you are fine, and you are such a dear little girl with your adorable sticky-outy tongue, that I have every confidence that no one will be able to resist you for all that long. In the meantime, you will have such fun and love and care, until that time comes." Mayetta sends Barbara and her doxie clan many happy doxie girl kisses and lots of very grateful hugs!

Thanks for Visiting Our Animals!

Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
