Alfalfa was rescued from a horrific puppy mill in Iowa. He was kept in a makeshift rusty cage that hung from the ceiling. His water was slimey, his cage was disgusting and there was a shotgun on top of it, indicating the fate that many dogs had already met. All of the dogs rescued that day were completely feral and terrified of humans. Alfalfa, although only a few months old at the time, had been permanently emotionally scarred. He has been at the HUA shelter for years and has not ever learned to trust people. Alfalfa is one of those dogs who just cannot ever get over the bad things that happened to him. Although he does not trust humans he has come to be comfortable and love his life at the sanctuary. He naps in the sunroom all day and will run up to people long enough to grab a snack, which has taken years to accomplish. Human interaction is not forced on him, as it causes him great distress. Alfalfa is a sweet fellow who very much appreciates the gift of living life on his own terms so that he can feel safe. He takes comfort in his dog pals and enjoys the time he spends with them running around the big yards and sleeping the day away on soft cozy beds.
Sanctuary Sweethearts

Hearts United for Animals is dedicated to the philosophy that all dogs deserve happy healthy lives with people who love them. Some dogs find that home with us as Sanctuary Sweethearts. They are animals who are not up for adoption for various reasons including health, age and personality issues.

The Sanctuary Sweethearts live full, comfortable, happy lives at Hearts United. It costs about 25 dollars a month to care for these special needs dogs (and to keep them in frisbees and balls!) The Sweetheart Program allows people to sponsor one of the animals living at the Shelter. We will send you a photo and information about the dog you are sponsoring and will update you on their lives during the year. You can stop your donation at any time.

These are some of the dogs who live at the Shelter as Sanctuary Sweethearts. You can sponsor a Sanctuary Sweetheart by clicking here. The cost is twenty-five dollars a month.

Thanks for Visiting Our Animals!

Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
