Dolly came from a backyard breeder in South Dakota. She was rescued by a breed rescue group. She tried and tried to learn to trust people, but she just could not bring herself to do it. After several months in foster homes, and several bites, she came to HUA to become a Sanctuary Sweetheart. Dolly is not at all vicious. She is just very fearful of people and thinks she needs to protect herself from harm. We cannot imagine what happened to Dolly to make her this terribly afraid of people. Dolly has the luxury of living life on her own terms at HUA. Nothing is forced on her. She is comfortable and happy. She has made small steps in learning to trust with people who are very, very gentle with her, but she still prefers to be left alone with her dog friends where she feels comfortable and safe.
Sanctuary Sweethearts

Hearts United for Animals is dedicated to the philosophy that all dogs deserve happy healthy lives with people who love them. Some dogs find that home with us as Sanctuary Sweethearts. They are animals who are not up for adoption for various reasons including health, age and personality issues.

The Sanctuary Sweethearts live full, comfortable, happy lives at Hearts United. It costs about 25 dollars a month to care for these special needs dogs (and to keep them in frisbees and balls!) The Sweetheart Program allows people to sponsor one of the animals living at the Shelter. We will send you a photo and information about the dog you are sponsoring and will update you on their lives during the year. You can stop your donation at any time.

These are some of the dogs who live at the Shelter as Sanctuary Sweethearts. You can sponsor a Sanctuary Sweetheart by clicking here. The cost is twenty-five dollars a month.

Thanks for Visiting Our Animals!

Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
