Turner was rescued from one of the most horrible puppy mills in Iowa. The conditions were beyond shocking, even for those used to seeing the most horrific puppy mills. Turner was beaten repeatedly with a shovel. His back is permanently deformed and hunched up from the abuse. He is also blind. Because of the abuse he suffered he is completely terrified of humans. His heart races and he goes into extreme panic mode when any human is near. He has to be sedated for even routine veterinary examinations. The good news for Turner is that he has found a pal, a very best friend to help calm his fears and make his days happy and content. Rascal Pug is Turner's roommate and very best buddy in the world. Rascal knows too what it is like to be abused at a puppy mill. He is also very afraid of people, having been swung around in the air by the scruff of the neck while he screamed for his life at the puppy mill that he came from. While these two are both very afraid of humans, their bond with each other makes their lives happy and complete. They get to live life on their own terms at Hearts United for Animals, being given the space they need to finally know peace in their hearts. They snuggle together in their warm blankets and when humans come near Rascal is on alert to protect his pal Turner. He is Turner's seeing eye dog, big brother and best friend.
Sanctuary Sweethearts

Hearts United for Animals is dedicated to the philosophy that all dogs deserve happy healthy lives with people who love them. Some dogs find that home with us as Sanctuary Sweethearts. They are animals who are not up for adoption for various reasons including health, age and personality issues.

The Sanctuary Sweethearts live full, comfortable, happy lives at Hearts United. It costs about 25 dollars a month to care for these special needs dogs (and to keep them in frisbees and balls!) The Sweetheart Program allows people to sponsor one of the animals living at the Shelter. We will send you a photo and information about the dog you are sponsoring and will update you on their lives during the year. You can stop your donation at any time.

These are some of the dogs who live at the Shelter as Sanctuary Sweethearts. You can sponsor a Sanctuary Sweetheart by clicking here. The cost is twenty-five dollars a month.

Thanks for Visiting Our Animals!

Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
