Santana was rescued from a horrible farm in Iowa where dogs were being bred for the purpose of selling the pups to pet stores for $50. Santana is a lovely girl, but still very shy and unsure of us. She has lived in misery so long that she cannot yet believe there is any goodness in life. Santana is heartworm positive. She is receiving treatment. It is very hard on her, and we hope that her poor worn out little body will endure it. There was a swamp at the property that was full of mosquitos. The dogs were being eaten alive by fleas and the mosquitos that were infecting them with heartworm. The person who owned the dogs admitted he had no money for medical care, since the pet stores only paid $50 for the pups. There would have been no profit for him in properly caring for the dogs. Santana will have a long tough road ahead. We hope she can survive it and come to know and enjoy love. UPDATE: Santana is through her heartworm treatment and is now healthy. She is a gentle, quiet little girl. She is still a bit fearful of the humans but is coming to accept love and affection. She has been through so much. It will take time and gentle love to ease her pain. Santana is a female Chihuahua. She was born in 2002 and weighs 8.4 pounds.
Her Buddy, Olivia Kauls, from Plattsmouth, Nebraska, sent her this message: "Hi little buddy, I'm going to be here for you until you find a forever home. Be strong little buddy. I will be praying for you. Olivia" Santana sends Oliva many grateful chihuahua kisses.
Her Buddy, Nikki Pickering, from Seddon, VIC, Australia, sent her this message: "Santana, you're the cutest little thing. I'm so happy you've been given a second chance and have my fingers crossed for a wonderful forever home for you. Fancy living in Australia with me? :)" Santana sends Nikki many happy, grateful kisses and thinks living down under sounds marvelous!
Hearts United for Animals is a national no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization. Hearts United for Animals does long distance adoptions if there are safe flights and we have volunteers in the area to do a home visit. We require an application, references and a home visit to adopt one of our dogs. Our dogs are all spayed or neutered and are current on health care. We can cat test a dog if requested. If you are interested in adopting a dog, we can give you more information on each dog if you click the Adoption Info & Application link above. Buddies are people who support the dog and send them love while they are waiting for their new home. The dog does not live with the buddy.
